Description
The twenty-two maps that constitute The Atlas of Man illustrate the Earth's climatological and geological past in conjunction with the history of man's evolution, from the Ice Age of Gunz until the present day. In doing so, this study throws a revealing light on the role played by the earth itself in the making of mankind. Thus, the Atlas of Man takes its departure from a time when man's remote ancestors were in possession of "pebble tools" and follows the emergence of the several races of man. The maps, hand-painted by the author, superimpose a depiction of man's evolving racial divercity and migrations on the dramatic changes of climate and environment brought about by the four great Ice Ages: Gunz, Mindel, Riss and Wurm, the interglacial periods that separated them and variations in climate since that time. They also depict the vast eustatic changes in ocean levels that occurred in consequence of the glacial periods, incorporating the appearance of land-bridges, exposed shore lines and the flooding of areas that are desert today. The interdisciplinary charactor of this study brings together the work of the leading 20th century anthopologists and geologists, and the juxtaposition of their disciplines goes far to resolve a number of riddles that have beset the study of early man. The text which accompanies each map gives a clear description of the significant discoveries made by three generations of specialists in the fields of prehistory and anthropology; as well as the author's commentary concerning the many questions that surround racial origins - questions clarified by his interdisciplinary approach. Among the authorities whose work informs the text are C.S. Coon, Louis Leakey, Teilhard de Chardin, F. Weidenreich, Bedrich Hrozny, Kenneth Oakley, as well as the African specialists H. Aliman and Sir H.H. Johnston, geologist, Rhodes W. Fairbridge and many others. A comprehensive listing of the fossil record is included with this - from Amzon
